Egg donor compensation

As an egg donor in a surrogacy process you want to help intended parents fulfil their desire for a child. Various costs are involved in this which are paid for by the intended parents. These include:

Commercial remuneration is prohibited. You are only entitled to the reimbursement of expenses.

Treatment costs

All the costs associated with treatment are reimbursed by the intended parents. In cases of IVF treatment involving a surrogate mother and an egg donor, the care is (not fully) covered by insurance. These costs are covered by the intended parents.

Other costs often occur too. These include:

  • Travel and treatment expenses
  • Allowance for healthy eating
  • Compensation for missed workdays for you and your partner
  • Possibly costs for an extra babysitter during treatment
  • Contribution towards (healthcare) insurance, for using up your deductible, disability insurance, term life insurance, life insurance.

You need to make agreements with the intended parents before egg donation on how these costs will be reimbursed.

Counsellor and lawyer costs

It is Important to have agreements between intended parents, surrogate parents, and a potential egg donor legally formalized by a specialized family law attorney prior to a pregnancy. It is customary for the intended parents to bear the costs for this too.

Any psychological guidance or counselling costs are also for the intended parents' account. Sometimes psychological screening or guidance is a mandatory part of the process.

Talking about finances

Talking about money can sometimes be awkward. For example, because you know that the intended parents have already incurred a lot of costs and you don't want to burden them further. However, it's important to make solid agreements about money and put them in writing. A specialised counsellor and lawyer can help you here too.
